Green Initiatives at Riverside Medical Center
By going green Riverside is helping take care of the planet and reduce our carbon footprint. Whatever steps we take will help make a difference today - and for future generations.
Riverside is pleased to announce the implementation of $550,000 in energy efficiency upgrades while securing over $300,000 in energy incentives from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, ComEd’s Smart Ideas for Your Business and Nicor Gas’ energy SMART initiatives.
In 2014, Riverside made an investment to decrease long-term operational costs across the health system impacting Riverside’s Senior Living, Medical Center and Oakside entities.
The lighting, steam and natural gas improvements made in seven of its clinics, the hospital, system parking lots, senior living facilities, health fitness center and health equipment store will save nearly $150,000 annually in energy costs.
The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation exists to improve energy efficiency, advance the development of renewable energy resources and protect natural areas in communities all across Illinois. In 15 years of existence, the foundation has awarded over 4,300 grants, totaling $204 million.
Riverside sends out 8 tons of material for recycling each month: cardboard, aluminum, plastic, toner cartridges etc. (avoiding landfill)
Riverside shreds and recycles 150,000 pounds of (confidential) paper each year. (avoiding landfill)
Reusable Sharps Containers
The Daniels SharpSmart Reusable Sharps Containment Device reduces our waste stream of needles, syringes, and plastic by 6.5 tons annually. The device also provides a safer environment for our staff and patients.
Riverside has invested in equipment and electronic medical record systems that allow physicians and staff to print less and scan more.
Our new East Tower addition is being built with many green materials including Low VOC Paint, Recycled Flooring Content, Renewable Resource Flooring, Urea & Formaldehyde Free Adhesives, super efficient Low E Glass, heat resistant White TPO Roofing, Occupancy Sensors for reduced energy consumption, and Energy Star Rated appliances. Also, a 6200 square foot Vegetative Living Green Roof System is being designed.
