Summer is a time for sunshine, exploration, and family fun—but it’s also a season where accidents and emergencies can happen in a flash. A little preparation now can prevent bigger problems later.

“Emergency preparedness isn’t just about major disasters—it’s about being ready for everyday situations, too,” says Jay Kinde, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator at Riverside Healthcare. “Summer is a great time to check in on your family’s safety routines and make sure you’re ready for the unexpected.”

Here’s your go-to summer safety checklist to keep your family healthy, safe, and prepared:

Stay Safe in the Sun and Heat

  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen regularly.
  • Dress in lightweight, protective clothing.
  • Drink plenty of water and take breaks from the heat.

Water & Outdoor Play

  • Always supervise children near water and wear bright colored swimwear for visibility.
  • Make sure bikes and scooters are paired with helmets.
  • Use bug spray and check for ticks after outdoor activities.

On the Road

  • Buckle up every time and use car seats properly.
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car.
  • Pack an emergency kit with water, snacks, chargers, and a flashlight.

Grilling & Fireworks

  • Keep grills at least 10 feet from your home.
  • Never let kids handle fireworks.
  • Keep a hose or extinguisher nearby when using fire pits or grills.

Don’t Forget: Health & Home Prep

  • Schedule annual checkups if you haven’t already. Staying on top of preventive care helps catch issues early and keeps your family healthy year-round. Find a provider or schedule an appointment at myrhc.net/acceptingnew.
  • Book school and sports physicals now to avoid the back-to-school rush. Many schools and teams require updated exams and forms before participation. Schedule a school or sports physical.
  • Review your home safety kit and emergency plan. Refresh any expired items like batteries, medications, and first aid supplies. Make sure every family member knows where to find emergency contacts and supplies.

A safe summer is a prepared summer. Taking time now to check off these items will help you enjoy the season with confidence and peace of mind.

If an injury or illness does happen, Riverside Healthcare is here for you. Our Emergency Department, Immediate Care Centers, and Primary Care Offices are here when needed.
