Finding Resources in Riverside's Various Support Groups

When one is facing a health issue – whether it be cancer, memory loss, or a chronic disease – the changes to their life can be difficult to navigate. This is just as true for the patient as for their loved ones, which makes support groups beneficial for both.

Molly Turner, a Licensed Social Worker at the Riverside Cancer Institute, encourages both patients and caregivers to participate in support groups as it's one of the many helpful resources offered by Riverside.

“Please reach out, because we do have resources that your loved one might qualify for. Unless you have already been in this role, you likely don’t know what those resources are,” said Turner. “Sometimes, just being able to sit down and talk about it, bounce things off of an uninvolved party, is very helpful.”

Cancer Support Group

The Cancer Institute hosts the We Can Support: Cancer Support Group on the first Tuesday of each month from 3-4 pm at Riverside Orthopedic and Spine Center, 100 Riverside Drive, Bourbonnais. Connect with others and share coping and support strategies in this welcoming support group, where patients, caregivers, and community members are invited to sit with social workers Kristie and Molly to discuss various topics relating to cancer care.

This support group, featuring guided conversations, is designed to provide a safe space for sharing coping skills, resources, and the normalization of experiences. For questions, call (779) 701-2085.

Diabetes Support Group

On the second Tuesday of the month, Riverside offers two support groups. From 2-4 pm is the Diabetes Support Group, where Riverside's Diabetes Wellness team is dedicated to helping you stay on track when it comes to managing your diabetes. Each support group has a unique topic tailored to helping you succeed. You will also find support and encouragement, knowing you won't be walking this journey alone.

Alzheimer's Support Group

Also on the second Tuesday of the month is the Alzheimer’s Support Group, which runs from 5-6 pm at Bourbonnais Grove - a Riverside Senior Life Community – at 85 E. Burns Road in Bourbonnais. Attendees will hear stories from others and learn helpful tips for caregivers along the way. Plus, you’re invited to share what you have learned while caring for your loved one. Stroke Survivor Support Group

On the third Thursday of the month is the Stroke Survivor Support Group, running from 10:30-11:30 am in cafeteria room B of Riverside Medical Center, 350 N. Wall Street, Kankakee. The Stroke Survivor Support Group is for any stroke survivor, their family, and/or caregivers. There will be fellowship, informational sessions, and times for questions and answers offered by our professional rehabilitation staff. The group is free of charge and anyone is welcome.

Heart Failure Support Group

Happening quarterly is the Heart Failure Support Group, which is scheduled for June 25, September 17, and November 5 from 4-5 pm at Riverside Cardiovascular Specialists, 400 Riverside Drive, Suite 1600, in Bourbonnais. 

Connect with others and learn valuable strategies for managing heart failure in our welcoming support group. Led by Riverside's heart care experts, these free quarterly sessions provide you with practical tips, expert advice, and a chance to share experiences with others who understand your journey. Whether you're living with heart failure or caring for someone who is, you'll find the support and information you need to live well.
