Winning the lottery is a dream of many Americans. The thought of an investment in a one dollar lottery ticket turning into a multi-million dollar prize is almost too much to fathom and often too much to resist. Those that purchase tickets usually have an idea of how they would spend the prize if they were to win, perhaps starting with drawing up some luxury house plans and paying a builder to create the home of their dreams. Funny how our minds always go to what kind of house we would buy when we think about winning or inheriting a great deal of money. Homes are part of the American culture, and your home can even be a reflection of your own unique personality.
Maybe that's why some great causes have caught on to America's obsession with their homes and have used it to generate some excitement-and some revenue-by raffling off houses as a fundraising tool.
That's what happened with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tennessee. They have held house raffles for years with the help of a homebuilder, various subcontractors, and several corporate sponsors. The results are astounding: $3.65 million raised for the hospital and its research since 2005 alone.
It starts with some contemporary house plans and an empty lot. A homebuilder builds the house, mostly with donated materials and labor, while the raffle tickets are advertised and sold. It's not unheard of for raffles to sell close to 10,000 tickets, and these raffles can generate big funds that can be used for children's medical research. Think of all the good that can be done! And because people want to support a good cause and live that lottery dream, they're more than happy to hand over their hard earned dollars for a ticket.
And why not? The houses up for raffle aren't tiny-they weren't built using small cottage house plans. Instead, luxury home plans with all the amenities are used. After all, this is a house that has to inspire people, to make them want to take their chances. It can't be just any ordinary house, but rather one that is, well, a dream house.
Raffling off a house is just one example of the many ways money can be used for the wonderful work done by hospitals, research organizations and other organizations. Each dollar raised can help make a difference in everything from groundbreaking research to better medical care for patients.
