Riverside Medical Center has been named one of the nation's Top 100 Hospitals by Thomson Healthcare, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of care.

The Thomson 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success award signifies excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance and efficiency. This is the first time Riverside has been recognized with this award.

"Being a 100 Top Hospital is a tremendous honor for Riverside," said Phil Kambic, Riverside's President and CEO. "This places us among the elite hospitals in the nation and is truly something all of our employees, physicians and the community should take great pride in. An award like this is not earned without the cooperation of many people working toward the same goal; to provide the best patient care possible."

In November of 2007, Thomson also named Riverside a 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospital in the nation. In October, HealthGrades named Riverside the number one hospital in Illinois for cardiac surgery.

In addition to being a leader for clinical excellence, Riverside strives to make patient safety a top priority. For the past two years, Riverside has received the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety Award.

"These awards are great, but what is more significant is the hard work, attention to detail and commitment to providing quality care that is behind each one," said Kambic. "We are fortunate to have such dedicated men and women on the frontline of care here at Riverside."

Riverside is among the 100 top hospitals to achieve the highest performance levels and be recognized for demonstrating superior clinical, operational and financial performance. Thomson estimates that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those at 100 Top Hospital winners, more than 120,000 additional patients would survive each year and more than 138,000 patient complications would be avoided annually. Thomson also estimates that expenses would fall by a combined $6.2 billion if all hospitals performed at that level.
