Kankakee, IL (January 24, 2012) – HealthGrades named Riverside Medical Center as one of its Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence today. This prestigious distinction places Riverside Medical Center among the Top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for clinical performance. HealthGrades is the nation's most trusted source of health care provider information.
HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, released today, objectively identifies those hospitals with the best overall clinical performance across all 26 medical diagnoses and procedures that the organization rates. Riverside is one of 263 top-performing hospitals representing only 5 percent of the nation’s hospitals and is designated as a HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™.
“At Riverside, we strive to provide our highest thinking, kindest touch and strongest commitment to excellence to each patient we serve. Receiving the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ award means we’re doing it right and I am proud of our physicians, nurses and staff,” said Riverside’s President and CEO Phil Kambic.
Over the years, Riverside has received multiple five-star ratings and Specialty Excellence Award distinctions from HealthGrades for many of its service areas, such as: Cardiac, Orthopedic, Neurosciences, Gastrointestinal and Critical Care. A commitment to quality outcomes coupled with specialty excellence awards and five star ratings, contributed to Riverside Medical Center receiving the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ award, according to HealthGrades.
“Riverside Medical Center can be proud of the contributions of its physicians, nurses and staff in achieving outstanding patient care,” said Kristin Reed, MPH, HealthGrades vice president of hospital ratings and author of the study. “The Kankakee community is fortunate to have access to some of the highest quality hospital care in the nation.”
Riverside Medical Center has been providing award-winning care for years. Along with being the area’s only Magnet Recogized hospital and a 100 Top Hospital four years in a row, Riverside is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery. Riverside has received the Orthopedic Surgery Excellence four years in a row and the Joint Replaces Excellence, Stroke Care Excellence, and Prostatectomy Excellence awards three years in a row.
Unlike other hospital quality studies, HealthGrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and inhospital complications. HealthGrades’ analysis is based on approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010. Using these top-performing hospitals as a benchmark in this year’s HealthGrades study, HealthGrades quantifies the impact of differences in hospital quality in terms of lives lost and unexpected complications.
