(Kankakee, IL) April 19, 2010 - Riverside Medical Center finds itself in very elite company these days.
For the third straight year, Riverside has been named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.
In addition, the area's largest healthcare provider was placed in an even more distinguished group, as Riverside was recognized as an Everest Award winner. That honor is reserved for 100 Top Hospitals that have achieved an even higher level of performance. Only 23 hospitals across the country earned the Everest Award.
"Being a 100 Top Hospital is a tremendous honor for Riverside," said Phil Kambic, Riverside's President and CEO. "To also be named as one of 23 hospitals in the nation to receive the Everest Award really exemplifies Riverside's unending commitment to our community and the patients we care for."
The 100 Top Hospitals award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, financial performance, and operational efficiency. Riverside received 100 Top Hospital designations in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The winners were identified through an in-depth analysis, the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks study. The study evaluated 2,926 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in 10 areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia.
"The boards, executives and physician leaders of the Everest award-winning hospitals developed long-term strategies and executed them with extraordinary skill to produce extraordinary results," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters. "The Everest award winners are leaders and innovators and they are bringing great value to their communities."
If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in these 100 Top Hospitals award winners:
Riverside Medical Center also recently received the HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for the fifth straight year. That distinction makes Riverside one of only three hospitals in Illinois and one of 59 hospitals in the nation to achieve the award for five or more consecutive years.
Earlier in the year, Riverside also received multiple Specialty Excellence Awards from HealthGrades in orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, spine surgery and treatment of stroke.
