Kankakee, IL (February 15, 2013) — Riverside Medical Center today announced that is has achieved national accreditation from DNV Healthcare, the only hospital accreditation program approved by the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that integrates the ISO 9001 Quality Management System with the Medicare Conditions of Participation. DNV’s accreditation program evaluates the hospital’s full continuum of patient care throughout its various sites of service.

“The DNV program is in sync with our long-term commitment to patient safety and total quality,” says Phil Kambic, President and CEO of Riverside Medical Center. “There has not been a new approach to hospital accreditation in a very long time. The ability to integrate the stringent ISO 9001 quality discipline with our clinical and financial processes is a major step forward in ensuring benefits for our patients, our providers and the community.”

DNV hospital accreditation addresses exacting quality-driven standards for hospitals dedicated to patient-centered care in the continually changing healthcare environment. DNV surveyors will visit Riverside annually instead of every three years as was done previously by the former accrediting agency. DNV evaluates the hospital’s adherence to patient safety criteria established by CMS and the processes that impact patient care across various departments and facilities of the hospital.

“DNV’s approach is more holistic, looking at us as an integrated system of care” says Mary Schore, Director of Quality Improvement.  “DNV is very thorough and the accreditation doesn’t feel like an inspection. We see collaboration. The DNV program helps us find opportunities throughout the organization to improve every day. This is a welcomed change.”

“With DNV, we look at accreditation as a strategic business tool and as a mechanism to empower our staff,” emphasizes Kambic.

Being accredited by DNV allows Riverside to receive reimbursement for its patients covered by Medicare and Medicaid. The DNV NIAHOR accreditation program was authorized by CMS in 2008 and today DNV provides not only hospital accreditation but also Primary Stroke Center Certification. Riverside will have three years to become compliant with the ISO 9001:2008 standards in order to maintain its accreditation with DNV.
