(Kankakee, IL) June 21, 2011 - Rush-Riverside Cancer Institute was recently granted Accreditation with Commendation by The Commission of Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS).

Riverside Medical Center and the cancer program received Accreditation with Commendation following an onsite evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the hospital and its cancer program demonstrated a Commendation level of compliance with various standards including cancer program leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement.

"This accreditation is further evidence of the excellent quality of Riverside’s care available to our community,” said Dr. Mehmet Sipahi, Riverside’s Medical Director of Oncology.  “Our proximity ensures patients are able to remain near supportive family and friends and focus on fighting cancer rather than deal with lengthy commutes to other areas.”

Receiving care at a CoC-accredited cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to:

And, most importantly,

Riverside Medical Center provides access to the latest technology, so patients have more powerful ways to fight cancer while remaining close to home and family. Individual treatment plans are created by a dedicated team of cancer experts who collaborate with each other and colleagues from Rush University Medical Center and other major cancer centers. Advanced treatments include minimally invasive procedures to highly-evolved radiation therapy and robotic-assisted surgery, along with access to the latest medications and clinical research trials.  In addition to the Rush-Riverside Cancer Institute, Riverside also recently opened its Special Services center in Watseka to provide convenient access and world-class cancer care to those living throughout Kankakee and Iroquois counties and the region.

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is consortium or professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rate and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and 42 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.  For more information about the Commission on Cancer, visit
