Take Steps to Prevent Illness
The following health tips are provided as part of Riverside Medical Center’s ongoing commitment to the health of our community.
- Wash your hands often. This is one of the most important things you can do to keep from getting sick and prevent spreading germs.
- When washing your hands, use soap and warm water and scrub all surfaces for 15 seconds before rinsing.
- If soap and warm water are not available, use alcohol-based hand gel to disinfect your hands. Rub the gel into your hands until they are dry.
- Cough or sneeze into a tissue and throw it away immediately.
- Stay home if you are sick to prevent coworkers from catching your illness. Keep your distance from others who may be coughing or sneezing.
- Get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, eat nutritious foods, manage stress and drink plenty of fluids.
Prepare for the Flu Season
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately five to 20 percent of U.S. residents contract the flu every year. The most effective way to prevent the flu is vaccination. The best time for a flu shot is October or November, but you can benefit from the vaccination throughout the flu season which generally peaks in late December to early March.
Who Should Get a Flu Shot
Flu shots are suggested for most everyone, but the CDC recommends that the following groups in particular should receive the vaccine, including:
- People at high risk for complications with the flu, including residents of long-term care facilities and pregnant women.
- Individuals who can transmit the flu to others at high risk for complications, such as healthcare workers and those who care for children up to 23 months old.
- Those who are 50 to 64 years old.
