Robotic Surgery at Riverside
In 2005 Riverside Medical Center was proud to announce that our physicians successfully performed only the third robot-assisted open-heart surgery in Illinois. As one of only a handful of hospitals in Illinois utilizing the da Vinci® robot, Riverside is the only hospital in the Kankakee region providing minimally invasive robotic procedures.
The robotic system is an extension of the surgeon's hands and eyes. By providing a magnified, three-dimensional view, and permitting range of motion comparable to that of the human hand, wrist and arm, it gives the physician incredible control and exceptional visualization. This includes an ability to see behind organs and structures, which was previously possible only with open surgery.
Physician-assisted robotic surgery patients benefit from an eliminated need for major incisions, reduced trauma to the body, minimal scarring, faster recovery times, less post-operative pain, decreased risk of infection, less anesthesia, reduced blood loss, less need for transfusions, greater surgeon precision, and increased surgeon dexterity during complex procedures.
Benefits of Robotic Surgery
- Shorter Hospital Stay
- Less Pain
- Less Risk of Infection
- Less Blood Loss and Transfusions
- Less Scarring
- Faster Recovery
- Quicker Return to Normal Activities
