In 2005 Riverside Medical Center was proud to announce that our physicians successfully performed only the third robot-assisted open-heart surgery in Illinois. As one of only a handful of hospitals in Illinois utilizing the da Vinci® robot, Riverside is the only hospital in the Kankakee region providing minimally invasive robotic procedures.
The robotic system is an extension of the surgeon's hands and eyes. By providing a magnified, three-dimensional view, and permitting range of motion comparable to that of the human hand, wrist and arm, it gives the physician incredible control and exceptional visualization. This includes an ability to see behind organs and structures, which was previously possible only with open surgery.
Physician-assisted robotic surgery patients benefit from an eliminated need for major incisions, reduced trauma to the body, minimal scarring, faster recovery times, less post-operative pain, decreased risk of infection, less anesthesia, reduced blood loss, less need for transfusions, greater surgeon precision, and increased surgeon dexterity during complex procedures.
Benefits of Robotic Surgery
- Shorter Hospital Stay
- Less Pain
- Less Risk of Infection
- Less Blood Loss and Transfusions
- Less Scarring
- Faster Recovery
- Quicker Return to Normal Activities
About the da Vinci® Surgical System
The da Vinci® Surgical System is powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology. The System allows your surgeon’s hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements of micro-instruments within the operative site. The magnified, three-dimensional view the surgeon experiences enables him to perform precise surgery in complex procedures through small surgical incisions.
The da Vinci® System enhances surgical capabilities by enabling the performance of complex surgeries through tiny surgical openings. The System cannot be programmed nor can it make decisions on its own. The da Vinci ® System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from your surgeon.
The da Vinci® Surgical System has been successfully used in thousands of prostate cancer procedures world-wide.
Only requiring 1-2 cm incisions, The da Vinci® Surgical System is the only commercial technology that provides your surgeon with the precision, dexterity and control of traditional open surgery.
The da Vinci® Surgical System consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon's console, a patient cart with four interactive robotic arms, a high-performance vision System and patented EndoWrist instruments.
At the da Vinci® console, your surgeon operates while seated comfortably, viewing a highly magnified 3D image of the body’s interior. To operate, the surgeon uses master controls that work like forceps.
As your surgeon manipulates the controls, da Vinci® responds to your surgeon’s input in real time, translating his or her hand, wrist and finger movements into precise movements of miniaturized instruments at the patient-side cart.
To access the target anatomy, your surgeon introduces the precisely controlled EndoWrist instruments into the body through a series of dime-sized incisions. A broad range of instrument types are available to help your surgeon perform specialized tasks with precision and control.
