Cold and flu season is in full swing, but with a few proactive steps, you can help protect yourself and your family. Boosting your immunity is key. Make sure you’re eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Foods high in vitamin C, like oranges and bell peppers, can help support immune function. Staying hydrated and getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night are also essential.

Frequent handwashing is one of the best defenses against spreading germs. Scrub your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after sneezing, coughing, or touching public surfaces. If soap isn’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

“It’s about building healthy habits year-round,” says nurse practitioner Liji Surrao, a primary care provider at Riverside Healthcare's Internal Medicine Bourbonnais. “By taking small but consistent steps like washing your hands regularly and maintaining a nutrient-rich diet, you can significantly reduce your risk of getting sick.”

It’s also important to recognize cold and flu symptoms early. A cold typically comes on gradually with a sore throat, runny nose, and mild fatigue, while the flu hits harder and faster, often with a fever, body aches, and significant fatigue.

Seek medical attention if you or a loved one experiences difficulty breathing, chest pain, persistent high fever, or symptoms lasting more than 10 days. Staying vigilant and proactive can make all the difference in navigating this season with good health!

Let’s keep those tissues at bay—stay well this winter!
