Riverside Healthcare has been recognized as an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer in the 2026 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), released by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. The HEI is regarded as the national benchmarking tool for evaluating LGBTQ+ inclusion and equity practices in healthcare organizations.
“We are honored to receive this recognition of our commitment to treating every member of our community with dignity and respect while delivering remarkable healthcare experiences,” said Phil Kambic, Riverside Healthcare President and CEO. “Inclusion and belonging remain central to our mission, and this recognition reinforces our commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and supported.”
The 2026 Healthcare Equality Index marks the 17th edition of the report and includes 741 participating healthcare organizations nationwide. Of those, 323 earned the designation of LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader, while 343 were recognized as LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performers.
Participating organizations are evaluated on criteria including non-discrimination policies, staff training, patient services and support, employee benefits, patient and community engagement, and responsible citizenship. Organizations can earn a maximum score of 100 points.
Riverside was one of only 53 participants nationwide to improve its designation this year, advancing from the Healthcare Equality Builder category to Healthcare Equality High Performer. Riverside is also the only hospital in Kankakee County to receive this recognition.
