April 29, 2021Riverside urologist Michael Gambla, MD, recently welcomed Diane Young, MD, from Traverse City, Michigan, for hands-on training in HoLEP—a minimally invasive laser surgery used to treat enlarged prostate (BPH). Dr. Gambla has performed HoLEP for several years and shared procedural insights and tips with Dr. Young during the visit.

“Anytime I can lend my expertise to others in my field, I enjoy the opportunity. Our profession is a constant collaborative approach, whether within the walls of our own hospital or with others throughout our region and country.”
— Michael Gambla, MD, urologist
About the visiting physician
Dr. Young practices with Bay Area Urology in Traverse City and is part of Munson Healthcare, a regional health system in northern Michigan.
What is HoLEP?
HoLEP is a surgical treatment for men with an enlarged prostate (BPH). Using a holmium laser, a urologist carefully removes excess prostate tissue that blocks urine flow. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Many patients choose HoLEP because laser precision can help the surgeon remove the obstruction effectively.

“I find that HoLEP procedures can have excellent long-term outcomes and recovery experiences for many patients,” said Dr. Gambla. “Being able to share how to perform this procedure with other doctors helps give more patients access.”
BPH symptoms and treatment options
With BPH, men may have trouble emptying the bladder, need to urinate more often (especially at night), or experience leakage. Treatments range from medication to office-based procedures and minimally invasive surgery like HoLEP. Your urologist will help you choose the option that fits your needs and overall health.
