Riverside Cancer Institute recognized for multidisciplinary approach to cancer care

Riverside Healthcare and the Riverside Cancer Institute have been granted a three-year Accreditation with Commendation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a cancer care quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
“This Accreditation with Commendation truly emphasizes that when our patients receive care at the Riverside Cancer Institute, they are receiving the highest level of cancer treatment right here in our own community “ said Dr. Mehmet Sipahi, Medical Director of the Riverside Cancer Institute. “Our highly-skilled staff are committed to providing the highest standard of cancer care while simultaneously improving ease of access. This recognition further proves that Riverside is a regional leader in treating cancer and improving patient experience.”
As a CoC Accredited cancer program with Commendation, the Riverside Cancer Institute takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating each individual cancer as a complex group of diseases, requiring consultation among medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other board-certified experts specializing in cancer care. This multidisciplinary, team-driven approach results in improved patient care.
In order to earn voluntary CoCAccreditation with Commendation, a cancer program must:
- Meet 34 CoC quality care standards
- Be evaluated every three years through a survey process
- Maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered care
The Riverside Cancer Institute continues to grow and improve its quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs available throughout the region, including prevention, early diagnosis, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, lifelong follow-up for recurrent disease and, when needed, end-of-life care. When patients receive care at a CoC-accredited facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, psychosocial support, patient navigation and survivorship care – all important elements that improve the cancer treatment journey.
