Golf is a game of skill, precision, and repetition, which can also be taxing on the body. Many golfers experience pain or stiffness that affects their performance or keeps them from playing the game they love.

A smooth golf swing looks effortless but requires coordination, strength, and good form. If your form is off, it can lead to aches, stiffness, or serious injuries. Even for casual golfers, wear and tear on their joints and muscles can occur if they’re not careful.

Common injuries or physical issues experienced by golfers include:
•    Low back pain: One of the most common issues among golfers, often related to poor mechanics or limited core stability.
•    Golfer’s elbow: Pain on the inside of the elbow that can come from overuse or improper grip and swing technique.
•    Rotator cuff strain or tear: Shoulder pain or weakness due to repetitive swinging or lack of shoulder mobility.
•    Wrist tendonitis: Inflammation in the wrist from gripping the club too tightly or hitting the ground during a swing.
•    Hip mobility issues: Limited rotation or tightness in the hips can affect swing power and increase strain on the lower back.

To avoid these problems, it’s essential to focus not just on your game but also on your physical health. That’s where golf-specific rehab and training programs, like the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), come in. The TPI program takes a personalized approach by assessing your swing mechanics, flexibility, and movement quality. From there, trained therapists can build a plan that includes targeted exercises, therapy, or traditional physical rehab if needed.

“Every golf swing is different, which is why treatment plans are tailored to each golfer,” says TPI-certified Riverside physical therapist Alex Denklau, DPT. “Being able to work individually with each golfer is what makes this program successful, and we are excited to see the positive impact it has on the golf community.”

The TPI program is not a performance-enhancing screening. It is geared toward individuals wanting to identify swing mechanics that may be causing adverse physical effects on their bodies.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this program to our community,” said TPI-certified Riverside physical therapist Marcus Rinaldi, DPT. “Our goal is to provide golfers with the specialized care they need to stay healthy and enjoy the game for years to come.”
