Respiratory problems affect millions of people — and they can arise from many causes, including pollution, smoking, infections, and lifestyle choices. Samrat Khanna, MD, a pulmonologist at Riverside Healthcare, shares what you need to know about the most common respiratory conditions and how to protect your lung health.

"Respiratory problems can arise due to various factors such as pollution, smoking, infections, inflammatory conditions, and lifestyle choices," says Dr. Khanna. "Understanding and identifying the underlying cause is essential for their prevention and effective management."
Asthma
Among the most common respiratory conditions, asthma affects people of all ages. It is a chronic inflammatory airway disorder that can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.
"Early diagnosis and proper management are crucial to control symptoms and improve a patient's quality of life," Dr. Khanna explains.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
COPD is a serious and progressive lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe. It is largely caused by smoking and represents a significant health burden for many patients.
"Quitting smoking and adopting a healthier lifestyle are crucial in COPD prevention," Dr. Khanna emphasizes.
Poor Air Quality
Air quality can become a health concern — especially for people with existing lung conditions. When air quality is poor, taking precautions matters.
"If the air quality is unhealthy, try to stay indoors and limit outdoor activities," says Dr. Khanna. "Especially sensitive groups should consider wearing either an N95 or N99 mask to protect themselves if they must go outside."
