Event intended to help reduce air travel anxiety for individuals with disabilities
Riverside Rehabilitation & Therapy will present “Taking Flight,” an airport experience simulation, on Sunday, October 4, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the D14 Aviation hangar at Greater Kankakee Airport. This event is presented free to the public with support from D14 Aviation and Lewis University.
The event will consist of a variety of experiences designed to help reduce travel anxiety for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities, neurological conditions, or mental health conditions.
“Air travel can be a stressful experience under the best of circumstances, and for travelers with disabilities, cognitive difficulties, or mobility limitations, that stress can be even more significant,” said Amanda Roy, Licensed Speech Therapist at Riverside. “This event will provide crucial experience, comfort, and skills to help ease that travel anxiety.”
Activities during the event will include ticketing, checking a bag, going through security, talking with a gate agent, and boarding a plane. Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Therapists from Riverside Rehabilitation & Therapy and partner organizations will assist participants. Information about additional Riverside services and community resources will be available at the event.
This event is free, but registration is required to participate. The registration form is available at myrhc.net/takingflightevent.
