What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows your lungs to gather more oxygen than would be possible under normal conditions. This oxygen-rich blood helps promote healing, fight infection, and reduce inflammation.

What to Expect During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

At Riverside’s Wound Care Center, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. Here is what you can expect when receiving Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT):

  1. Pre-Treatment Evaluation: Before your first session, our team will review your medical history, explain the procedure, and answer any questions. We will also provide guidelines to follow before treatment, such as avoiding certain medications or personal care products.
  2. Getting Ready for Treatment: You will change into 100% cotton garments provided by our team to reduce any static or fire risk. Personal items such as phones, lighters, or electronics cannot be brought into the chamber.
  3. Inside the Hyperbaric Chamber: You will lie down in a clear, comfortable chamber where you can relax, watch TV, or listen to music. As the chamber pressurizes, you may feel fullness in your ears—similar to being on an airplane. Our team will guide you on how to “clear” your ears if needed.
  4. Breathing Pure Oxygen: Once at full pressure, you’ll breathe 100% oxygen for about 90 minutes. Most patients rest or even nap during the session.
  5. After the Session:  When the session is complete, the chamber will gradually return to normal pressure. You may feel slightly tired afterward, but most people return to their normal activities with no downtime.

Every session is monitored by a trained hyperbaric technician and overseen by our medical team to ensure your safety and optimal results. Our goal is to make each treatment as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Who Is a Good Candidate for HBOT?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is often recommended for individuals with:

  • Chronic non-healing wounds, especially those related to diabetes
  • Radiation injuries from cancer treatment
  • Infected or compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Crush injuries or traumatic wounds
  • Osteomyelitis (chronic bone infections)
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning

If you’re unsure whether HBOT is right for you, our team of wound care specialists will work with your physician to determine the best course of care.
