Frequently Asked Questions About OB Hospitalists
We understand you may have questions about what OB hospitalist coverage means for your care. The information below explains how this works at Riverside, what stays the same for your prenatal care, and who to contact if you need help.
What is an OB hospitalist?
An OB hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for patients while they are in the hospital for labor, delivery, and urgent pregnancy-related needs. OB hospitalists work closely with your OB/GYN and the Family Birthing Center team to support safe, high-quality care during your hospital stay.
Who will deliver my baby?
Deliveries at Riverside are based on the on-call provider schedule. Riverside Women’s Health providers and the OB hospitalists share call coverage, which means your own OB/GYN, another Riverside Women’s Health provider, or an OB hospitalist may be the provider on call when you go into labor.
All providers work together to ensure you receive excellent care.
What happens if I have a scheduled C-section or induction?
Scheduled C-sections and inductions will continue to be planned with your OB/GYN whenever possible. Your provider will discuss your delivery plan with you ahead of time and answer any questions you may have.
Will I still see my OB/GYN for prenatal visits?
Yes. Your prenatal care will remain the same. You will continue seeing your OB/GYN provider for all of your prenatal appointments throughout your pregnancy.
Why is Riverside starting an OB hospitalist program?
Many hospitals across the country use OB hospitalist programs because they help ensure there is always a physician available in the hospital for labor and delivery patients. This model strengthens patient safety, supports the care team in the Family Birthing Center, and allows clinic providers to focus on caring for their patients during office visits.
Who should I contact if I have questions?
If you have questions about your pregnancy, delivery plan, or care at the Family Birthing Center, please contact Riverside Women’s Health during regular office hours and ask for the site supervisor. The team will be happy to help answer your questions.
Where can I find information about the OB hospitalist providers?
We are currently in the process of implementing this change. Once the OB hospitalists who will be part of our coverage team are finalized, their information will be available on the Riverside website.
